The Compass/Map Reading/Land Navigation Class covers compass components and use, identifying bearings and back-bearings, map reading, basic terrain feature identification and navigation, and basic GPS functionality.
Class will be equal parts lecture and field work:
- Day 1/2, 4 hours lecture and class work
- Day 3, 8 hours field work
Required Items for Class:
- A "base plate" or "Lensatic" compass (pictured below, both are suggested)
- A Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Grid Reader that includes a 1:24,000 scale (pictured below, any style works)
Students will have the opportunity to identify locations and relay them using the Universal Transverse Mercator system, identify plots and routes, identify bearings and back-bearings for navigation, identify and relay the location of a distant point on a map.
This class is designed for members inexperienced in map reading, compass use and land navigation.
